New Year Partygoers Advised to Dress Warmly with Snowfall Predicted Across the UK

Weather experts have indicated an icy start to the new year, with snowfall anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Continue In Spite of Forecasts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are planned to take place, unlike last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid advisories for snow across northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so extra layers will be needed," stated the national forecaster.

Celebrations Under Clear but Frosty Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. The mercury are forecast to be cold, meaning warm wraps a necessity, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Advisories for Friday

Heading into Friday, advisories have been issued across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

  • Transport is expected to be affected.
  • Travelers have been urged to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
  • Delays and cancellations are likely on public transport.

The Mercury Set to Plummet Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are likely to affect the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Alerts Issued

At the same time, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities explained this meant the weather was expected to lead to significant impacts across medical and care provision. This includes a potential rise in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.

The advice for all is clear: to see the new year in good health, preparing for winter conditions is absolutely key.
